15 NOV ANOTHER STEP ON THE PATH OF TRUTH AND JUSTICE: SIGNING AN AGREEMENT WITH THE INTERNATIONAL, IMPARTIAL AND INDEPENDENT MECHANISM

In a step to support the course of truth and justice, and to approach the efforts of the Association of Caesar Families in the case of our families and loved us from prisons and detainees, the association signed a protocol of cooperation with the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism, from the United Nations, which is competent to research and investigate the Syrian affairs.

By signing the protocol, the Caesar Families Association seeks to push forward the file of detainees, focusing on being the priority on the agenda of International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism. Impartiality is the first step in our quest to hold the Syrian regime accountable for its committed crimes against our children who have been tortured in detention.

“Our mechanism is one of the tools for accountability,  which aims to preserve files on serious violations and present them in trials,  whether those that adopt jurisdiction, or in the future in the special national courts in Syria, and therefore the goal is to hold criminals accountable,” Yasmin added, explaining that coordination in the sharing of documentation files between the association and the mechanism as representatives of the associations of victims and those with the right to accountability and to establish the role of associations as well.   In the accounting process, through close follow-up of the courses of justice, we aspire to reach the same goals as the Charter of Truth and Justice.

The commission has previously revealed that it has more than one million records of crimes committed in Syria since 2011, according to a UN report. The task of the mechanism is to collect and analyze information and evidence related to international crimes committed in Syria to assist in criminal proceedings in national, regional, or international courts and judicial bodies.

Worth to mention, that the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism, established in March 2011 to access information and evidence, is one of the main actors in the dialogue on Syrian affairs at the United Nations. It also stopped between 2014 and 2018 due to the difficulty of its work documenting violations and working on its own reports within UN standards. On December 21,  2016, the UN General Assembly adopted its resolution establishing an International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism to assist in the investigation and prosecution of persons responsible for the most serious crimes in accordance with the classification of international law committed in Syria since March 2011.
